About the Candidate

Having been born and brought up in South East Wales, I am totally committed to this area, and would dearly love to represent your interests in the Westminster Parliament.

I was born (in 1966) and brought up in Newport, Gwent and went to St Julian's Comprehensive School, in Newport and Gwent College of Further Education before going to St David's University College, Lampeter graduating with a BA (Hons) History.

I recently completed an MA in Celto-Roman Studies at the University of Wales, Newport and am currently working towards a Research PhD at Cardiff University.

After moving back to Wales in February 1998 I have worked as a Webadministrator in Higher Education at the University of Wales, Newport. While living in London, I worked for the Directorate of Public Affairs and Internal Communications, the Press and Public Relations Office for the Metropolitan Police Service, based in New Scotland Yard.

Before living and working in London, I worked as a trainee journalist for the then Pontypool-based Free Press Series newspapers. As a trainee reporter, I was responsible for covering an extensive area which included Blaenafon, Blackwood, Cwmbrân, Pontypool, Newport , Torfaen and Usk.

I have been a member of Plaid Cymru since 1994, being active in London, Newport and Monmouthshire, standing in Monmouth Constituency in the Westminster Election (in June 2005) and the last National Assembly Elections (in May 2007), having previously contested local council elections in 1999, 2001, 2004 and helped with regional organisation and co-ordination of electoral activity across South East Wales. Posts I have held included that of Regional Vice President.

As well as being involved in a number of different political and non-political campaigns across South Wales, I am a member of Friends of the Earth, the Institute of Welsh Affairs, the British Computer Society, a Council for British Archaeology Cymru member and a member of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies. I am a member of Unison - having served as a branch chair and shop steward at the University of Wales, Newport. I am interested in the growing problem of a lack of affordable housing, law and order, ID cards, public transport, the Welsh economy, and the so-called war on terror, its consequences and subsequent threats to civil liberties.

Other issues which concern me are the developments on devolution and regional government within the United Kingdom and the EU, and the emergence and development of democracy in central, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. For relaxation I enjoy writing and overland travel, particularly trekking off the beaten track and hill-walking. I am also a long time supporter of Newport County AFC (the successor to Newport County since 1988), the Gwent Dragons and Newport Rugby Football Club.

Over the coming months I shall make every effort to get out and meet residents of Monmouthshire as much as possible, and I look forward very much to hearing about your interests and your concerns. Together, I hope we can give political life in Monmouth Constituency the new start it badly needs.
